The 5-Minute Uni-Proof Make up Routine by Makeup Artist Antonis Malialis

Makeup tips you need to survive university!

Choosing to wear makeup to uni is not unlike attempting to survive a zombie apocalypse; if you’re unprepared for what’s ahead, there’s really no hope for you.

The sun, sweat, and tears coupled with the long hours are definitely your enemy! Defeating all of them at once is not an easy task.

However, there are many things you can do to increase your odds of survival.

The base

If you want your makeup to stay in place throughout the long day, you must never ever forget step no.1 THE BASE!

If you’re in the oily / combination skin club like our beauty tender Rafaella, a mattifying primer will work wonders.

Antonis Malialis TIP: For an extra layer of armour, apply a VERY THIN layer of translucent powder before foundation- this will help to soak up the oil before it breaks through.

For dry skin apply a lightweight, water-based moisturiser and allow it to sink in for at least 20-30 minutes before proceeding.

To conceal or not to conceal?

If you’re on your way to an exam and expect to break a sweat or flood the University with a tidal wave of tears, I would avoid foundation altogether; the tears will simply wash it off in little streams.

If you do feel the need to wear anything on your face, concealer is your best bet. Simply blend it over anything you’d like to conceal (even your bad decisions) and set it with powder.

However, on a regular day or if you prefer to wear foundation, matte is best. It won’t move around as much and will help to keep sweat and oil at bay.

Antonis Malialis TIP: If you have sensitive eyes and/or expect to cry, avoid putting concealer too close to your lower lash line. The heat from your skin will slowly move the product upwards and it burns (trust me, I’ve been there).

Take a brow

Fleeky eyebrows can make the world of difference, and since they’re above your tear taps, it’s very unlikely that they’ll peace out during the post exam.

Antonis Malialis TIP: If you’re a beginner at filling in your eyebrows and fear that they’ll be too dark, simply leave it until the end. That way, your entire face is already done and you don’t have to guesstimate.

Lashing out

At uni, wearing mascara is like playing Russian roulette.

You have three options here:

Avoid it completely: if you find that your makeup looks complete without it, simply go lighter with everything else.

Choose waterproof: This is self-explanatory, but waterproof is really the Queen of the mascara world.

Be strategic with your placement: avoid putting any on your bottom lashes and try not to put too much near the roots of your upper ones.

Double whammy

If you don’t have a lot of time to complete your look, using your products in multiple ways can be a great time saver.

Bronzer is great for carving out your cheekbones, and is the secret to quick, Kylie Jenner-esque eyeshadow. Simply blend it through the crease of your eye with a fluffy eyeshadow brush, et voila!

And if you really want to get fancy with it, douse your cheeks in highlighter and pop some onto the centre of your eyelids using your ring finger.

Antonis Malialis TIP: Your ring finger has the softest touch, and uni causes premature wrinkles (allegedly), so using it will help to minimise the chance of developing crow’s feet at the age of 21.

Lipstick saves the day

If all else fails, whack on some lipstick and call it a day.

Best of luck to you all.

Cheers!
